Gettiing started on my research project

I'm going to be working on the question of James Joyce's depiction of gender, and have chosen as my theme "Drunken Men & Bargaining Women" hence the title of this blog. At the moment, I'm formulating my research proposal, and following the FutureLearn course on Developing Your Research Proposal in the hope of learning how to do it effectively. At the moment, I am somewhat unsure of all this, but I hope that it won't be too long before I'm confidently blogging away. Fingers crossed!!!

  1. Re-reading Richard Ellman's Biography of Joyce, and finding numerous allusions to drunken men, most specifically John Stanislaus, Jim's father. Apparently, the fall in the toilet referred to in " Grace" (Dubliners) was akin to one experienced by J.S., and the frequently violent behaviour he exhibited when drunk was similarly used by his son for numerous inadequate Dublin fathers. I need to find out the statistics for male alcoholism in the place/period & discover whether any obliging sociologist like Henry Mayhew did some studies thereon. Might be useful to get access to some contemporary newspaper content etc. too. Have to try to work out how to access said materials, however. In the meantime, getting on with reading bio. and notetaking.
